Hace poco que conocí la musica de Osmar Maderna , a pesar que tengo 58 años ...Y es hermoso lo que dejó en sus pocos años de vida ...Que lastima que sus temas no se difundan como se lo merece ...Muchas gracias por pasar este tema , creo que que de un famoso compositor ruso y es uno de los temas mas dificiles de ejecutar.

That song is extremely controversed, even Billie didnt wanna sing it at first. It didnt fit her style at all and God know she hated change, she had her habits. That text was born in a time where black people didnt really want to to confront that horrible past yet the text itself sends Billie and her whole community straight into that past. Many studios were reluctant to record that piece, its a very small studio politically leftist that accepted, knowing they'd still get in trouble for that. She's one of the first jazz singer to sing politicized content, one of the first black american "protesting" song. The song itself is also criticized : it doesnt swing, doesnt feel like a ballad, too short structure, no solos...

Art Hickman never imagined his signature song could be played this way.

One of my favourite compositions / recordings of the 40s. Once I heard this piece 35 yrs ago, I can never seem to forget it, similar to Coleman Hawkins' Body & Soul. Amazing to think Calloway was a Serious Orchestra leader, more than just his Hide-Ho and Ole Geechie Joe stuff. Perfect mood-piece for a warm May afternoon.
